I get it.  We are women.  We all want to feel beautiful and like we are at our best no matter how dry and irritated our eyes are feeling.  We don’t want to hide our eyes behind glasses.  Or worse, we absolutely do not want to not wear any makeup at all.  Review this list of ten practices which will keep you more comfortable in your contact lenses for the long haul.

  1. Always wash your hands before touching your contact lenses.

The dirt, dust, and bacteria on your hands does not need go get trapped underneath your contact lens.  It will irritate the eye and possibly cause redness and watering.

  1. Never store your full or empty contact lens case in your make up bag.

Fine powders and glitters could make it into your contact lens case and contaminate your lenses.

  1. Insert your contact lenses before applying any moisturizers, creams or makeup to your eyes.

You don’t want to get any creams or makeup on the lenses and trap them on your eyes.

  1. Do not use any waterproof makeup.

Waterproof makeup contains waxes to prevent them from washing off with water.  These waxes can clog the delicate pores and oil glands in your eyelids.

  1. Remove your contact lenses every night.

Even if the contact lens is FDA approved for overnight wear, there is always a greater risk of complication when sleeping in contact lenses.  If you already have dry eye symptoms these contact lenses which will be coated the proteins, dirt, dust, pollen and debris from the day, will then act to irritate the eyes all night long.

  1. Remove all of your makeup every night.

Use a commercially available oil free make up remover, hypoallergenic is preferred, or use organic coconut oil.  Again, do this only after you have removed your contact lenses.

  1. Use a makeup primer.

Primer will help your makeup stay on your face instead of in your eyes.  Avoid powdered eye shadows and any shadows with glitter.

  1. Replace mascara, makeup brushes and applicators regularly.

These applicators should be changed every 3 months at a minimum.  This should include getting new tube mascara.

  1. Replace your contact lens storage case every 3 months.

The case that houses your contact lenses is prone to becoming contaminated with dirt and bacteria in a 3 month lifespan.  Dispose of the case and replace with a new one.

  1. Switch to daily disposable contact lenses if you are able.

Daily disposable contact lenses are thrown out after each wear.  Therefore, your eye is always receiving a fresh, clean pair of lenses.  Makeup debris from the day before is not a worry with a brand new pair of lenses.
